Supportive Questions to Help You Understand a Prospective Employer’s Benefit Package
We’ve all heard the saying “you don’t know what you don’t know,” and this couldn’t be truer when it comes to understanding the benefits offered by a potential employer! The world of employee benefits can be complex, but asking the right questions can help you make informed decisions about your career and future. Below are some questions you can ask to help make this process smoother!
(1) May I connect and talk with current employees?
These casual conversations, or as we like to call them, “coffee chats”, are where you can learn more about perks beyond the typical offerings such as paid time off, health insurance, 401k, and other retirement plans. These can also give you more insight into the company culture and work-life balance.
(2) Could you provide more insights into the work environment options?
Inquire about the flexibility to shape your work routine, whether it’s in-office, remote, or a mix of both. Consider factors like potential long commutes and how they might affect your daily work. If you’re neurodiverse or have a disability, discuss the feasibility of creating a workspace that’s more accessible within your home. This way, you can ensure a comfortable and productive work setup tailored to your needs.
(3) Where can I learn more about the organization’s policies?
It’s important to understand the amount of paid time off (PTO) offered to both new hires and existing staff. Take into account how this fits into your current and future lifestyle, especially in regards to situations like bereavement, parental leave, short and long-term sick leave, as well as disability benefits. It’s worth noting that some organizations have policies on accruing PTO, along with minimum tenure requirements that affect when you can actually utilize your PTO days. Don’t forget to address these points in advance! This way, you’ll have a comprehensive understanding of how PTO functions within the organization.

(4) What contributions does the organization make in regard to retirement planning?
Candidates typically ask questions surrounding 401k plans and what that truly looks like in terms of retirement savings. You may want to ask if, and what, the employer will match but also if there’s a waiting period for employer matching. Be aware of what employers in your market typically contribute before your interview, and don’t be afraid to ask for a higher employer contribution because you don’t know what you don’t know. It’s always worth checking if they can offer more or if there’s other additional benefits to consider at the organization such as a pension plan.
(5) What are all available insurance options for new and existing employees?
Most employers have insurance plans but understanding what each offers is critical. This includes knowing the premiums for yourself but also for your current or future partner and family as well. It’s also helpful to have a clear breakdown of the full array of insurance offerings – like life, disability, dental, health, and vision – to ensure you’re making well-informed decisions about whether the benefits offered at the organization fit your current and future needs and how you can plan for the future!
These questions are key pieces of the larger benefits puzzle. It is important to understand and ask as many questions as possible to ensure the offer is right for you. Continue to seek out colleagues and do the research to help you feel confident and prepared in your decision. Your future self will thank you!
