How to Escape Getting Ghosted By Employers
We’ve all been there. You’ve applied for your dream job or aced the initial interview, and then… silence. Days turn into weeks, and you find yourself wondering, “Will I ever hear back? Should I reach out?” The waiting game in the job search can be incredibly stressful. In fact, our research shows that it is the top contributor of candidate stress in the process! We are here to help you navigate this tricky phase and escape the dreaded ghosting.
Before You Apply:
Check the Post Date: Recruiters usually aim to fill full-time positions promptly, so if you stumble upon a job posting that’s been up for several months, it might be a sign. The role may have already been filled, or the listing wasn’t updated. Take a moment to check the company’s career page for the most current openings. If you find many outdated listings, be prepared for the possibility that the career site might not be regularly updated.
When You Apply:
Thoroughly Review the Job Description: Within the job description, employers might provide insight into when you can expect to hear back. If they do, great! Use this as a guideline. If that timeframe elapses, it’s a perfect opportunity to make contact.
Check if you Received an Initial Acknowledgment Email: While not all employers send confirmation emails, if you do receive one, it can include information and timeline expectations. Within this email, organizations may note that due to high volumes of applications, they may not get back to all applicants. While not ideal, it can help manage your expectations of receiving a response.
Stay Organized: Keeping a simple spreadsheet with details of the roles and companies you’ve applied to, along with the application date, can help you with ensuring you’re ready for timely follow-ups if needed.
Following Your Application:
When to Reach Out: If two full weeks pass without a response after you’ve submitted an application, it’s time to take action.
Who to Contact: If possible, find the listing owner, hiring manager or appropriate contact. Reach out via email or LinkedIn with a message like:
“Hi [Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I’m following up on my application for the [Job Title] listed on [Career Page]. I’m very enthusiastic about this position and [Company Name], and I’m confident that my skills align with the role. Please let me know if there’s any additional information I can provide. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]”
During the Interview:
Clarifying Timelines: If the interviewer doesn’t outline the next steps during the conversation, don’t hesitate to ask. Seek insights into the interview process, the expected timeline for filling the role, and the anticipated start date.
Communicate Other Offers: If you make it to the final rounds of an interview process and have received other job offers, you should let the recruiter know. While recruiters often ask you about this, if they don’t, proactively share the information. This ensures they are aware of any time constraints you’re working with, which can help alleviate some of the stress on your end.
After the Interview:
Incorporating Questions in Thank You Email: If you miss the opportunity to ask during the interview, ask about the timeline in the thank-you email. Express gratitude, share what you gained from the conversation, and express your enthusiasm for the position. Close with: “Could you please let me know when I can expect to hear back regarding my candidacy for this position?”
Follow-up After Anticipated Time Has Passed: After the anticipated follow-up period has passed, wait one additional business day for a potential response. Then, reach out with a polite note like:
“Hi [Name],
I hope you’re doing well! I’m following up on the status of my candidacy for [Position Title]. I was informed that the timeline to hear back would be [Date]. I understand the recruiting process is fluid, so if you could kindly provide me with any update on when I can expect to hear back, I’d greatly appreciate it.
Thank you!”
Remember, the job search process can be a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and waiting for feedback can be one of the most challenging aspects. It’s important to note, you’re not alone in this journey. By following these steps, you’ve empowered yourself to take proactive steps towards getting the answers you deserve. Keep in mind that your skills and experiences are valuable, and the right opportunity is out there waiting for you. Stay persistent, stay positive, and never underestimate the impact of your determination. We’re rooting for your success!
